Presented by Steve Yasko, General Manager, WTMD 89.7 on February 21, 2012   Last year WTMD launched a city-wide community engagement campaign, the Great Baltimore Check-In.  The station partnered with city magazine, Urbanite, and used Foursquare to drive "check-ins" at 89 of Baltimore's notable places.  With promotion on both the station and in the magazine, the campaign was deemed a success with tons of buzz, over 1100 check-ins and new underwriting revenue.  Come hear how they did it and the lessons learned along the way.   Register Here to Access Playback

DEI Webinar: Down to Brass Tacks - Budgeting and Evaluation for Marketing
Presented by Bridget Murphy, Marketing Manager, Minnesota Public Radio; Kristen Holgerson, Director, Marketing and Promotion, WBUR; and Constance Crawford, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Capital Public Radio on October 25, 2011   One of the problems with marketing is that it can be hard to measure, and therefore hard to budget for (especially if you have to "sell" that budget to a skeptical senior manager). How do you know where best to put your resources? How do you evaluate the effectiveness of one marketing activity in comparison to another? Note: The information in this session was presented at the 2011 PMDMC.   LINK: WBUR TV Spot LINK: WBUR Branding Spot (mp3 file)   Register Here to Access Playback
DEI Webinar: Write a Fantastic On-Air Promo in 60 Seconds
Presented by Eric Nuzum, Acting VP of Programming, NPR on October 11, 2011   Promo writing isn’t hard once you focus on who you are talking to and what you need to tell them. This webinar (based on a PMDMC session that drew raves) will walk you through an exercise that’s regularly used by the staff of NPR programs like Morning Edition, Fresh Air, and All Things Considered to write great promos that help raise awareness (and listening) to programs on your station. The time it takes to write these stellar promos? Not hours or days—it takes about a minute. (Oh, and it applies to other on-air copy too, including case messaging).  Note: The information in this session was presented at the 2011 PMDMC.   Register Here to Access Playback

DEI Webinar: Growing The Audience - Their Experience Matters
Presented by Israel Smith, DEI's Marketing Coordinator; and  Deborah Blakeley, Blakeley & Company on March 29, 2009   Local stations must pay relentless attention to the quality of listeners' experience if they are serious about growing the audience.  In this second part of a two-part series, programmers and marketers Deborah Blakeley and Israel Smith will tell you how.  Following a 12-month timeline of manageable steps, they will illuminate a few basic actions that can help any station increase local listening, the bedrock of local financial support.  The webinar will address on- and off-air promotion, critical listening to programming and pledge, and managing programming change.  Stations are strongly encouraged to have their PD listen to this webinar.  Before the presentation, please read Deb and Izzi's 'Thinking Audience' paper, part of the CPB "Grow the Audience" project, led by the Station Resource Group.   Request the File
DEI Webinar: Station Contests & Promotions - How to Play Without Paying
Presented by John Crigler, Attorney, Garvey, Schubert, Barer on October 16, 2008   Every station gives things away on the air, offers special premiums during drive, and/or offers prize drawings at festivals or station events.  This session examines the law governing contests, sweepstakes, premiums, and raffles.  Can crummy rules be a crime?  Can you change the rules after the contest has begun?  Can a good raffle be a bad contest?  How can a pie-eating competition go bad?  Can a fishing contest become a form of gambling?  How hard does the FCC laugh when the prize is a joke?  Join us and find out the answers to these and other questions you may have about this important legal topic.   Register Here to Access Playback
DEI Webinar: Splash Pages and Light Boxes during On-air Drives
Presented by Deb Ashmore, Director of Individual Giving, WXPN; Steve Mulder, Director of User Experience & Analytics for NPR Digital Services; and Leslie Shields, Membership Manager, MPR on May 2, 2012 Splash pages or light boxes on station homepages have become a part of stations’ on-air drive strategies to build engagement and generate more donations, but does it really make a difference? Join us for a look at three different tests conducted to examine the effectiveness of interstitials and learn about the results.  Bring your questions and ideas about how to develop your own hypothesis and test. We’re hoping this will be an open forum, so please invite your web team as well to join the discussion.  Also if you have any tests or ideas to share with us, please email mcoulson@deiworksite.org and we’ll look forward to including you in the discussion!   Register Here to Access Playback

DEI Webinar: Making the Case for Support
Presented by Walt Gillette, ACFRE – Director of Development, WAMU, Washington, DC; and Gretchen Gordon, CFRE – Assistant General Manager & Director of Development and Outreach, KUAC FM/TV, Fairbanks, AK on June 4, 2013   When focusing on your biggest donors and gift conversations, donors and funders don’t appreciate boilerplate...and most membership materials do not a case statement make! You'll need to refocus and work collaboratively on a few core talking points that clearly describe the importance of your station's work.  Learn how to tailor those talking points – with the right balance of persuasion and vision -- to develop unique new language to speak directly to the interests of the donor or prospect. And, learn exactly what a case for support is (and is not) and how to effectively deploy case points or a case prospectus in conversations with your donors. The process is extremely rewarding -- and perhaps a rite of passage -- for you as a development professional, and for your entire station staff.   Register Here to Access Playback
